urban sketches from Berlin

In the middle of november the weather allowed me to sketch outside. So I took a little sketchbook and some pastels with me. I choose a place where I had a good view over some old buildings, partially destroyed during the last war.

During the last months I had not much time for sketching, so I decided to upload some recent sketches from november and one from the summer I found recently. All of them are sketched on location with an inkpen and one also with colored pencils.

During the last weeks there was not much time for painting. On my to-do list were some bird paintings. The barn owls was painted for the exhibition »Uilen op de Beeldenstorm« in Holland.

Last weekend finally I made my decision to take my pastels for plein air with me. Soon I realised, that I needed a lot of middle, high-key tones, sunblockers and tick spray.

Some impressions from this beautiful landscape. The benefit from painting at the end of June is, that the days are pretty long. It's possible to paint for more than 14 hours. The first day I finished three small and middle sized painting. The second day my batteries lasted only for three paintings.

plein airs from Rügen (Ruegen spelled like Bruno)

In the middle of June I spent 5 days painting on the the german island Rügen (Ruegen), the biggest german island in the baltic sea. All these paintings are from the south-east part, especially from Klein- and Groß-Zicker. Zicker is an old slavic name for tit (the small birds – Paridae). The polish name for tits is sikora. On two photos you can see my new painting gear – a so called pochade box, imported directly from Montana/USA. This is the »Bitterroot« modell. There is a guy – Ben Haggett – who produces these exceptional wooden boxes. It’s a real joy to paint with.

chickens

Somewhere deep in the eastern part of East-Berlin is located a big park with a narrow-gauge railway runs by children. There is also a petting zoo with different animals. And they have these amazing chickens with black necks and tails. I made some sketches and photos. Last year I bought a black frame, so I thought to make a painting which will suit especially to this frame.

great-crested grebe

South-east from Berlin is located the Seddin-lake. There is a spot, where black-headed gulls, great-crested grebes and black terns are breeding together. I spent about 6 hours on a boat bridge not covered in the bright sun. My left face is now sunburned. Actually I wanted to sketch the black terns, but all these breeding grebes were good subjects of painting.

On the last day from our painting trip, I managed to made these 3 small oils. The painting in the middle was the last one. I started with it, because there were still a lot of oil colours on the palette.
