During the last weeks there was not much time for painting. On my to-do list were some bird paintings. The barn owls was painted for the exhibition »Uilen op de Beeldenstorm« in Holland.

South-east from Berlin is located the Seddin-lake. There is a spot, where black-headed gulls, great-crested grebes and black terns are breeding together. I spent about 6 hours on a boat bridge not covered in the bright sun. My left face is now sunburned. Actually I wanted to sketch the black terns, but all these breeding grebes were good subjects of painting.

About 50 km west from Berlin, still exists a very small population of great bustards. More then 200 years ago this big and impressive bird, were very common in middle Europe. Meanwhile this species is worldwide threaten. Today, inside the protected area around Buckow/Nennhausen big hides are offering a good view over their mating fields. All these sketches are done in the first week of April.

Two weeks ago I spent a week in the Uckermark (a wild region, north from Berlin). I had a lot of opportunities for sketching. There are many lakes around mostly with grebes, goldeneyes and swans. The first six sketches are sheets (30 x 30 cm) from my sketchbook. I used mainly a black ballpoint with colored pencils. The great crested grebe (with the whole reflection) is a huge (A2 = 42 x 60 cm) sketch with inkpen and pastels (Neopastel by Carandache). The wagtail (sized A4 = 29,7 x 21 cm) is with ballpoint and Neopastels.
